"I shed my dead husband from me, my father who passed to a better place, my aged mother, my children, now adults – the objects of love, annoyance, grief, joy, fears, hopes that went up in smoke. I shed them all, until only I, myself, am left. I am light, released. Free to love you anew." |

“Walking Back to Happiness” sings the deep voice of Helen Schapiro, forever fifteen years old. And for one moment, I am eighteen, dancing in the arms of my husband, long gone. A light breeze of black velvet touches my heart; grief’s caress. And from the wrinkles of sorrow comes the joy, for you being you, my beloved, capering your own youth towards me in our kitchen. Were you also touched by that grief, watered down by strange happiness, for the beauty that was and is no more, and for the gift of desire between us?
